Kalu restores councillors’ pay
package
By Uche Nwosu,

Local government councilors in
Abia State who last week rejected their monthly pay of N53,000 are now to
enjoy a full monthly package of N107,000 as recommended by the Revenue
Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFAC).
It was learnt that the
decision to increase the package to tally with the one approved for
councillors nationwide was taken after a meeting at the Government House,
Umuahia on Wednesday between Governor Orji Uzor Kalu, local government
chairmen and the leaders of the 17 councils.
The councilors had met with
Kalu last Monday at the instance of the governor shortly after they
resolved to reject their June pay that was slashed from N107,000 to
N53,000.
Speaking with journalists
after meeting with the governor the leader of Isiala Ngwa North
legislative council, Mr. Louis Iwe, said the government had restored
their salaries to what it ought to be.
He declared: “The governor in his usual
magnanimity has restored our salaries to an encouraging level and has
assured us that the state will not deny us any of our legitimate
entitlements.”
Iwe said they were also
assured that circulars on the new salary scale will soon be issued to
them.
The Commissioner for Local
Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Chris Ojembe, said the meeting
discussed the payment schedule for the councilors, their entitlements for
the first 28 days in office and their security votes.
He added that Kalu promised to
take up the gray areas on the salaries issues with the RMAFAC. Also, the
Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Onuoha Udeala, said the
success of the meeting was evidence that Kalu has cordial working
relationship with councilors who are the politicians at the grassroots.
The councilors had last
Saturday announced that they were rejecting their monthly emolument of
N53,000 as was paid in June because it was lower than what their
counterparts were being paid in other states.
