Onikeke returns against Mutumla for Commonwealth title

By Pius Anakali

Snr. Correspondent, Lagos

African Boxing Union Welterweight Champion, Fatai Onikeke would return to the ring to take a shot at the commonwealth title held by Tunisian Hassan ‘Red Bull’ Mutumla, the promoter of the bout Olu Aboderin has informed Daily Independent.

Speaking in an interview in Lagos yesterday, Aboderin who also doubles as the manager of the kid pugilist said the Nigeria Boxing governing body has sanctioned the fight billed for the Kwara State capital in September.

He said all necessary arrangements have been put in place to ensure that the bout went as planned.

“We are very prepared for the coming bout billed for Ilorin”, Aboderin said, adding, “All necessary arrangement has been put in place. We have spoken to those directly and indirectly concerned with the fight and every one is ready and waiting for the day Onikeke would have the opportunity to take a step towards achieving his life ambition of being a world-renowned fighter”.

He also informed that the governor of Kwara State, Bukola Saraki has also thrown his weight behind the fight, while the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari has also given his blessing for the fight. Aboderin who is often referred to as Nigeria’s ‘Don King’, also informed that beside the Onikeke versus Mutumla fight which is the main bout of the day, other local and international matches have also been lined up to make the might a memorable one.

On the card for the night is the bout between Nigerian Williams Elesin and Ghanaian Billal Mohammed who would feature in an 8-round encounter. Others are Azeez Onikoyi and Savi Jistin of Republic of Benin, which is also an 8-round encounter. There would be African Bantamweight fight between Felix Jumbo and Adewale Ibrahim as well.
