NIPOST Sports Festival: Anambra laments neglect

By Okey Maduforo

Correspondent, Awka

The management of Nigerian Postal Services (NIPOST) in Anambra State is not happy over the neglect of the state government to its appeal to support its contingent  in the just concluded NIPOST sports festival in Kwara State.

The state territorial manager, Mr. Eva Njemanze, who disclosed this at a reception organised by the management for its contingent who won laurels at the just concluded Kwara 2004 Sports Festival, said that he is not comfortable with the support of Anambra State government to the festival.

According to him, all efforts to bring in the state government to the activities of NIPOST and to recognise the success story recorded by its staff proved abortive as government failed to respond to its appeal.

“The contingent has made Anambra territory proud indeed. That is the reason why management has expediently decided to dedicate this day and these medals to them as a way of honouring and applauding their meritorious performance, but I must state here that I am not comfortable with the support of Anambra government to this festival which is rather too poor,” he said. “You will recall that when they left for Ilorin for the festival, most people did not give them any chance of succeeding. But at the end of the festival, the sceptics were proved wrong by the superlative performance of our athletes.

Njemanze further noted that the history of sport festival in NIPOST is well known to all and sundry as the Postmaster-General, Alhaji Abubakar Argungu has provided the enabling environment having realised the importance of sports to NIPOST.

A breakdown of the medals won by the state contingent shows that they won a trophy and gold in basketball, gold in women (single) lawn tennis, gold medal in 200 metres (women), silver medal in 200 metres (women), bronze medal in 100 metres (men) and silver medal in 4x100 metres relay (women).

Decorating the contingent, the chairman of the occasion, and president Rotary Club Awka, Chief Kudi Ogugua urged them to strive to achieve greater heights in subsequent festival while urging government and the private sector to come to the aide of the organisation.
