Govts Urged to Prioritise Drugs Import From Chinedu Eze in Abakaliki Ebonyi State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Alo, has said that there is need to prioritize the importation and purchase of those drugs that are essential for the prevailing diseases in the country, noting that the current increase in marketed drugs in Nigeria has not actually translated into a proportional improvement in people's health. Speaking at the inauguration of the State Essential Drug List (EDL) Committee in Abakaliki Ebonyi State Capital, Dr. Alo said that essential drugs have been defined by World Health Organisation (WHO) as those drugs that satisfy the health care needs of the majority of the population. "They should be available at all times in appropriate dosage forms at all levels of health care delivery system of the country. Their selection is based on the most common diseases in any given location," the Commissioner said. He assured that with the inauguration of nine-man Committee of Essential Drug List in the State, he would now start action on the needed legislative instrument to back the State's essential drug programme. Also, in a speech, a Director in the State Ministry of Health and a member of the Committee, Mrs. Helen Anwara, reiterated the importance of Essential Drug List and said that it is important for essential drug programme, which is the cornerstone of the National Health Policy.
