My Regrets in Politics - Na'Abba From Chuks Okocha in Abuja Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Ghali Umar Na'Abba, weekend in Abuja, broke his long political silence and expressed regrets and fears on the nation's bumpy political landscape ahead the 2007 general elections. Speaking to newsmen at the Women Development Centre, venue of a seminar organised by a pro-IBB organisation, Eagle Group, Na'Abba said "my regret is that there is no democracy in Nigeria. You as journalists know that there is no democracy in Nigeria. It is not because I am no longer involved. I am happy that I am not even part of this process now." He took a cursory look at the current political development in the country and noted that it has left much to be desired and, therefore, cautioned Nigerians on what he called the magical year 2007. "After taking a cursory look at the events leading to the general elections in 2007, I came to the conclusion that it is not realistic. "Well, social indicators don't point to a situation whereby 2007 will be a normality. Any social scientist can tell you this. I am not one of those optimists who believe that 2007 will be actualised," he stressed. Pressed to expatiate on his position, he explained that "social indicators do not indicate that 2007 is going to be a normal year. I don't have to elaborate." In this regard, he added that he has no expectation for 2007, saying "I do not have any expectations for 2007." Na'Abba cautioned Nigerians to beware of the unfolding events towards 2007, noting that "I don't want to play God. Everything is in the hands of God but we have to be very, very careful." Speaking on the object of the gathering against his stated views on 2007, Na'Abba explained that he, like several others, was an invitee and not an IBB campaigner.
