NCWS Canvasses for Women Free Medical Care From Iyefu Adoba in Abuja Concerned about the alarming statistics of maternal mortality and unsafe abortion, National Council of Women's Societies (NCWS) has called for the provision of free and accessible maternal health services for all women of reproductive age. In a communique issued by NCWS and signed by its National President, Dr. Bolere Ketubu-Nwokeafor, at the end of a one-day dialogue with women leaders and spouses of legislators, resolved to sponsor relevant health and social bills that support women's reproductive health rights. The umbrella organisation for all women groups in the country also pledged to promote sexual education for women for the effective control of their sexual health and reproductive health rights. It called on all employers of labour and stakeholders to eliminate all discriminatory policies against women in the work place such as discriminatory medical services. Besides, the communique prayed for the reform of existing laws on abortion to include more indicators for the safety of women especially in cases of rape, incest and other health indications. On the issue of early marriages, the statement noted that the age of marriage for girls be put at 18 years while it resolved to protect the girl child and campaign for the enforcement of the universal and free compulsory primary education policy.
