NCF Hails Parks over Environmental Programme By Bennett Oghifo Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) has commended the National Park Service for using the facilities at their headquarters to ensure that school children in Abuja are afforded the opportunity to be educated on the need of environmental conservation. On an official visit recently to the National Conservator-General, Alhaji Lawan Marguba, NCF's Executive Director, Professor Emmanuel Obot, noted the impressive turn-out of school children from Abuja metropolis at the headquarters of the National Park Service. He said the best approach to environmental conservation is through education, especially with regards to school children. Obot described them as leaders of tomorrow, saying "a healthy future can only be guaranteed for the Nigerian environment when the basic tenets of conservation are integrated in the minds of today's children," while calling on the directors of the eight National Parks in the country to emulate the Conservator-General. Marguba in his address pointed out that he was impressed by the enthusiasm demonstrated by children in the metropolis in identifying with nature. He said the Park headquarters would even be made more conducive to environmental education in the near future. "Environmental education has always been a part of the Nigerian National Park Service but has been more pronounced in parks where there is a Support Zone Development Programme. This initiative by the Conservator-General could make it a permanent feature," he observed.
