How to Arrest Brain Drain - Don By Andrew Ahiante President of the Alumni Association of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Professor Oladapo Aderele Ashiru, has advised Federal Government on the brain drain currently affecting the nation across all disciplines. Ashiru made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the association's 30th anniversary seminar, where he dwelt on the quality of medical education in Nigeria. The brain drain syndromme, he said, was not just in the medical sector alone, but within all the health sectors and other disciplines. Though the association was doing its best to improve on the quality of medical education in Nigeria, he noted, the situation was not helped by government bureaucracy and lack of supports. "Under normal circumstances, hospitals should generate funds. But this is not helped by the lack of proper planning," he added, while lamenting the ugly situation especially as now obtains at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). "This is the only country where all professors irrespective of disciplines, receive the same salaries. This is not so in other countries. Professors of medicines at their level generate extra funds and donors for the development of that institution and country. It is good that they be paid commensurate to the efforts and funds they attracting to the country," the professor, who is also a member of the Nigerian physicians in America, said. He observed that his association has been in the forefront of attracting funds to the nation and already given equipment worth N1.5 million to LUTH.
