HURILAWS Evolves Agenda on Banking Sector Reform
By Collins Edomaruse

A human right advocacy organisation, HURILAWS, has evolved measures to aid the planned reform of Nigeria's banking and financial sector. It said in Lagos at the weekend that the action would come under its Better Business Initiative (BBI) programme.

Executive Director of HURILAWS, Frances Ogwo, noted this in a statement that her organisation has fashioned out a five-working-group agenda to achieve the desired effect in the planned sectoral reform.

She said the groups, made up of business advocates and advocacy institutions, represent the private sector.

"The Work Groups (WG) and their hosts are National Economic Summit Group (Agricultural Transformation WG), Lagos Business School (Small and Medium Enterprise WG) Manufacturers Associa-tion of Nigeria (Infrastructure and Trade Policy WG), African Institute for Applied Econo-mics (Macroeconomic and Trade Policy WG) and HURILAWS (Institutional and Regu-latory Reform WG).

Ogwo added that the BBI was a fall-out of a talkshop: "Inter-agency National Forum on Competitiveness and Private Sector Growth" held in Abuja, between July 12, 2002 by the World Bank Group in partnership with other donors, including DFID and USAID, and in collaboration with the African Institute for Applied Economics (AIAE).

She explained that the forum has explored what she called a host of different dimensions of Nigeria's economic reform programme, adding that "this event launched a series of working groups (WG) that are charged with formulating and advocating for reforms that, taken as a whole, will enhance Nigeria's competitiveness.

"The objective of this initiative, therefore, is to foster evidencebased policy and institutional dialogue.
