Institute Backs el-Rufai on FCT Reforms From Andy Ekugo in Abuja Nigerian Institute of Archi-tects (NIA) has thrown its weight behind the current redesigning of Abuja city by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, saying this is to prevent the city from structural decay and revert to the original master plan. Arch. Patience Okonta of NIA said this over the weekend during a press briefing to announce Archibuilt 2004 which is an annual international forum through which stakeholders in the building and construction meet to brainstorm on the needs of the sector. With a theme, "Urban Regeneration," the focus of this year's event, according to Okonta, would centre on sensitising the very essence of urban regeneration in terms of local development in materials and technology. She explained that going by the original master plan, Abuja was laid out as a city with all modern trappings and that due to lack of developmental control, the distortion in the city has caused a degeneration which ought to be corrected in time. Arch. A S Abubakar of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development noted that the main thrust of Arcibuilt 2004 is to strategise on practicable methods of regeneration to make sure that all necessary structures and materials are in place.
