Ebonyi Wades Into Union Crisis at State Varsity
From Chinedu Eze in Abakaliki
Ebonyi State government has waded into the crises of the non-academic unions of Ebonyi State University warning that it would deal severely with any staff of the institution found to be fomenting trouble in the name of trade unionism.
The Special Adviser to the State Governor on Public Safety and Security, Barr. Onwa Ali Onwa, handed down the warning during a meeting with members of Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU), EBSU chapter.
Onwa stated that government's interest is to see that peace reigns in the institution and every part of the state, adding that "government does not want any form of crisis, and like the case of Plateau State recently, crisis usually starts from a misunderstanding between two or three persons. Government wants to nip such crisis in the bud in this institution."
The special adviser recalled that the problem started in the institution in January this year when NASU members staged a peaceful demonstration at Government House, Abakaliki to press for the removal of the former bursar of the university, Mr. Dan Chukwu as well as payment of some leave allowances among other things.
He stressed that government had since complied with all the demands of NASU and wondered why peace is yet to return to the union, stating that the State Security Council is worried by a reported crisis brewing in the union.
Onwa said he decided to attend NASU meeting to help resolve the crisis and to observe whether the purported vote of no confidence passed on the executive of NASU was true or false.
The meeting, which was also attended by the Registrar of the School, Mr. Christian Eze as an observer, voted on the motion of no confidence earlier passed on the executive, and overwhelming majority of 160 votes as against two votes supported the sacking of the exco and its dissolution.
