Workers Chide Ministry over Council Fund From Daniel Ior in Makurdi Local Government Chair-men in Benue State have called for the scrapping of the state Ministry for Local Government and Chieftancy Affairs and the State Primary Education Board (SPEB), saying they are posing a serious threat to the development of the councils. The chairmen said the ministry has literarily appropriated upon itself, powers to decide how much of the monthly federal allocation approved for each of the local governments actually gets to the benefiting councils. The council chairmen in separate interviews told Thisday that as things stand now it would take a miracle before the elected council chairmen can provide the people with the dividends of democracy. Hon. Samson Ocholi, chairman Apa local government, for instance, feared that going by the kind of grip the local government ministry is maintaining on the councils, the councils have been literally reduced to mere departments while the local government ministry a local government. His words: "local government is not a government. It is operating like a department in the ministry for local government and Chieftancy affairs. It is the ministry that is the local government." The chairmen said they are worried about the level of deductions being made by the ministry.
