THE South- South caucus of the House of Representatives is to meet this week to take a stand on the suit instituted by twenty two states against the abrogation of the on-shore/off-shore dichotomy Abrogation Act . The Secretary of the South –South caucus in the House of Representatives. Hon. Pascal Adigwe told Sunday Vanguard in Abuja that the meeting was intended to articulate the position of the Caucus on the action of the twenty two states.
The nineteen northern states as well as Oyo, Osun and Ekiti states took the Federal Government to the supreme court seeking to void the Onshore/Offshore dichotomy abrogation bill on the grounds that the Act offends the provision of the 1999 Constitution. The action of the states has drawn sundry reactions especially from the south south which sees the action by the states as a display of insensitivity to the plight of the people of the region.
In an interview with Sunday Vanguard in Abuja, the secretary of the Caucus, Hon. Pascal Adigwe said the position of the caucus would be known after its meeting this week. He said that the caucus was embarking on widespread consultation both within and outside the region to determine the next course of action. “We are meeting and consulting and our position will be made known next week.
We however enjoin our leaders and governors across the country not to do anything that would undermine the goodwill of the President through the abrogation of the dichotomy, ” he said. The secretary also called on the people of the region not to panic but to remain calm as everything possible was being done to ensure that the region was not shortchanged. “I want to seize this opportunity to call on the people of the region to remain calm. Our leaders are doing everything including initiating dialogue and seeking political solution that would be devoid of confrontation” he said.
