Why S/E, S/S don’t want Ogbeh’s job

By SUFUYAN OJEIFO
Sunday, August 15, 2004

If you look at him from a distance, he carries on as if he is in a world of bliss. His gait does not betray the intense pressure and the heavy burden of managing the rumbling within his house. And to be sure, politics is not always blissful: it is full of intrigues and treachery, propelled by the desperation to protect and preserve interests.

This is why even the politically undiscerning know that these are not the best of times for Audu Innocent (is he still innocent?) Ogbeh, National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a behemoth of sort, which has consistently been under the threat of imminent disintegration.

Forget about his oratorical prowess, which he deploys to whitewash and/or paper over the cracks within in the media. But when you go closer to him, you will see, clearly defined on his face, the frustrations of a man who is buckling under a weight that defies oration, but which needs decisive action. And, although Ogbeh now appears to be biting, the action is dismissed as selective in that while his leadership is pampering the mighty, it is riding roughshod on the weak. And in all of these, his bias for some powerful interest has also been located, thus casting him in the mould of an interested party, who cannot be neutral any more in the unfolding contest for the soul of Nigeria (read the Presidency).

This may not be salutary, yet the garb of selective justice and political bias may be Ogbeh’s legacies as he eases out of office next year. How the party handles the transition has also thrown up some kind of puzzle. But not to worry, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih is on hand to solve it.
