Election: PDP tinkers with new rules
PATRICK ODEY,
Lafia
THE ruling
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is tinkering with new rules that will discourage
the scramble for party nominations several years before fresh general election
are due.
The new rules could also lead to expulsion
of erring members. Apparently irked by the several aspirants for the 2007
presidency within the ranks, a clear three years before the polling.
PDP National chairman, Chief Audu Ogbeh
said a code of conduct is underway for party stalwarts.
Chief Ogbeh was speaking in Lafia,
Nasarawa State during the National tour of PDP leaders to the North Central zone
holding in Lafia. He expressed "deep worry" over the "mad rush" for campaign by
aspirants
According to him "The electioneering
campaign are far too early. We cannot continue to give Nigeria and the world
that all we are interested in is one election after the other."
This, he said, must be discontinued as
according to him the party leadership has begun campaign to educate the public
that there is a government in between.
He stated that when the campaign begins
there would be a restriction and those who violate them would be shown the way
out.
He however urged politicians to brace up
for the challenges ahead saying that the road to 2005/2007 was fraught with
danger.
"As we approach 2005/2007 we are going to
witness high driving on the political highway, emergency lanes, with accidents
and deaths and uncontrollable ambition and application of methods that are less
than orthodox..."
He said though there is no harm in being
ambitious, the leadership of the party was determined to ensure that such
ambition must be done the right way.
In his speech, the acting chairman of the
Board of Trustees of the party Chief Tony Anenih, described the North Central
zone as the base of the party but regrets that some disgruntled elements have
resorted in using the youths to cause violence and troubles.
He stated that unless we put all these
behind us, there would be no headway for development and progress.
Chief Anenih assured that the meeting
would address issues like youth restiveness, discipline, unity and cohesion and
good governance, stressing that those who fall out from the party are free to
come back as the party would be ready to accommodate them once again. Host
governor Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu cautioned against campaign for 2007 saying that
"if we are not careful we may be completely distracted from next year."
