Moslem fanatics protest Bonnke’s crusade

JIDE BAKARE

RELIGIOUS extremists have struck again, this time in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital where a mob chanting Islamic slogans marched through the streets to protest against four- day crusade by world famous Christian evangelist, Reinhard Bonnke.

Rev. Bonnke and his Christ For All Nations organisation are guests of four-day Christian revival scheduled for the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) revival ground at Budo-Efo on the Ilorin-Omeran road between Wednesday August 18 and August 22 (this week).

The moslem extremists numbering about 200 marched through the centre of the city and were apparently heading for Government House, when a police-team intercepted the mob at Challenge area and dispersed them with tear gas.

But the mob was said to have re-grouped and headed for the Emir of llorin palace to protest the crusade but it was gathered that the Emir, Alhaji Zulu Gambari declined to grant them audience.

Confirming the incident, the Kwara State Police spokesman, Mr. Marcus Gideon (ASP) disclosed that no casualty was recorded during the process and that no arrest has been made in connection with the protest

Gideon added that not only had the command dispatched its men to keep surveillance of some strategic locations within Ilorin metropolis, they had also been instructed to keep watch over the churches and mosques in the town to prevent them from being touched by the aggrieved protesters.

It would be recalled that a violent demonstration which almost led to a mayhem was staged against a similar crusade held in the town by Reverend A.K. Paul from India in December 2002 following which the organisers were advised to shift the initial venue from the Kwara State Sports Stadium, Ilorin to another place.

The Shiloh ground of the World Assembly was eventually used for the programme.

Posters of Rev. Bonnke’s crusade have been pasted round the town while jingles are constantly played in the electronic media in the state to create awareness about the revival.
