Govt to raise corps members' allowance by 12.5 per cent

THE monthly allowance of corps members will soon be increased to reflect the 12.5 per cent salary increase in pulic officers pay, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Director-General, Brig.-Gen Walter Oki has said.

According to agency reports at the weekend in Abuja, Brig. Oki said that the proposal seeking the increase was already before the National Assembly for consideration.

The Federal Government recently increased the salaries of civil servants by 12.5 per cent.

In the year 2000, the Federal Government increased corps members' monthly allowance from N3,500 to N7,500 to reflect the minimum wage approved for civil servants.

According to Oki, corps members are part of the system, and they should therefore benefit from any increase in workers' salaries since they buy from the same markets.

He, however, said that the proposal would form part of the 2005 budget, adding that "we have made the proposal and we are hopeful that it would be reflected in the 2005 budget."

The Director-General said that the directorate had decided to de-emphasise the national awards usually given to corps members for outstanding performance.

"Greater emphasis is now placed on how best to use the services of the corps members.

"The directorate has realised that when corps members are treated equally, they tend to perform better than when some of them are given preferential treatment," he added.

Oki urged corps members to report staff of the directorate who assisted other corps members to abscond from duty to his office.

"We have had to punish some officers in the past for such acts," he added.
