Ebonyi commissioner tasks youths on hardwork, others
From Leo Sobechi, Abakaliki
YOUTHS in Nigeria have been urged to imbibe the culture of hardwork, devotion and dedication to duty.
These words came from the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Education, Apostle Sam Ogbo.
Ogbo spoke during the send-forth ceremony organised for Batch "B" corps members who served with the state's Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) in Abakaliki, the state capital, last weekend.
The commissioner told the out-going corps members that the worst thing that has affected the youth population in Nigeria is cultism and, therefore, challenged them to discard any remnant of the vice in them.
Ogbo said cultism is the worst enemy of youth development.
"This period of your passing out should be an opportunity for you to purge yourselves of this vice by adding meaning to your lives", he said.
He urged the corps members to go for Human Immune Virus and Acquired Immuno-deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) tests to establish their health status, frowning at the practice where those who tested positive to the disease often decide to hawk the virus.
Ogbo also urged the female corps members to return to their homes and avoid giving any false excuse that could enable them stay behind in their places of primary assignments.
Chairman of the state's UBEB, Chief Austin Igwe Edeze, pointed out that selfless service to humanity is the greatest impetus to life.
Edeze explained that the occasion was organised to appraise "these worthy patriots of our fatherland".
"Their selfless service, commitment and dedication to duty during their service year helped the board in revamping the primary education sub-sector in Ebonyi State", he said.
He added that the out-going corps members courageously injected their relevance and contributions into the mobilisation efforts of the board by leaving behind enviable legacies for education.
The state National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Director, Mr. Isaac Aluede, observed that UBEB has been instrumental to the success of NYSC in Ebonyi.
He reassured that NYSC would continue to assist and support the development of education in the state.
