Police queries FCT command over bank robberies
From John-Abba Ogbodo (Abuja)

WORRIED by the incessant cases of bank robbery in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Police High Command has queried the commissioner in charge of the territory, Emmanuel Adebayo.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of Administration, Sunday Ehindero, disclosed this in Abuja at the weekend.

According to him, the commissioner, the three area commanders in the territory and all the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) were summoned last week following a robbery incident in one of the banks located in Wuse District of the capital city.

Ehindero also said the police would re-organise security strategies in banks with a view to making them tighter.

His words: "We are now trying to change our strategies. We are thinking of inviting the banks to a meeting because they should not leave the problem of robbery in the banks to the police alone.

"We want to see how we can improve on what we have now. Recently, we invited the DPOs, area commanders and the commissioner and told them to take their jobs seriously."

He said that some measures had already been taken to address the menace.

He listed the steps taken so far, which included deployment of more policemen to the street of Abuja and supply of more communication gadgets to the FCT Command for effective communication.

Ehindero advised the banks to invest more on security gadgets so as to assist the police.

The issue of robbery in Abuja, especially in the banks, assumed an alarming proportion this year with no fewer than four banks as victims so far.
