AU to probe massacre-Obasanjo

CHAIRMAN
of the African Union (AU), President Olusegun Obasanjo, has said the continental
body would investigate last weekend’s massacre along the borders between Burundi
and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
He also described as barbaric, the
gruesome murder of innocent people just as he stressed the need for the speedy
return of peace to the troubled region.
President Obasanjo who, yesterday held a
mini-summit with some African leader in Pointe Noire, Republic of Congo,shortly
before attending the country’s 44th independence anniversary, condemned the
attack.
The meeting was attended by the presidents
of Congo, Denis Sassou-Ngueso, Omar Bongo of Gabon ,Fredric de Menezes of Sao
Tome and Principe and a few other top representatives of some AU member-states.
The AU chairman also appealed to the
Burundi government and all stakeholders as well as members of the international
community to work towards the restoration of peace in that area.
Meanwhile, President Obasanjo led several
other African leaders to the 44th independence anniversary of the
French-speaking country.
The colourful event which held at Loango
Boulevard, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, featured match past by the Congolese
armed forces, the police, paramilitary services, local governments as well as
associations.
Nigeria’s green and white flag flew high
among those of other nations with members of the Nigerian community savouring
the joyous moment with their Congolese counterpart.
Apart from the other leaders who graced
the event after the AU mini-summit, also in attendance were former President
Jerry Rawlings of Ghana, Vice President, Central African Republic (CAR), Mr.
Abdel Ngumba and his DRC counterpart, Yerodia Abddoulaye Ndobasi.
Others were the Speaker, National Assembly
of Cameroun, Mr. Cavaye Djibril and former chairman, AU commission, Dr. Alpha
Omar Konare.
President Obasanjo has since returned home
after the one-day visit.
