Bash Ali Knocks Out Booth in Round 4

World Boxing Federation (WBF) Cruiserweight Champion, Nigeria's Bashiru Lawrence Ali yesterday at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos retained his title, knocking out his British challenger, Tony Booth in the fourth round.
President Olusegun Obasanjo who had been watching the live transmission of the fight on television telephoned to congratulate the boxer promising Federal Government's backing in his next fight.
The fight which was schelduled to last 12 rounds saw both boxers showing much determination as they threw many punches at each other from the sound of the bell in round one.
Nigerian boxing fans were momentarily worried in round two when Booth, in white short and canvass unleashed a salvo of blows that staggered Bash Ali who wore green shorts with white stripes and black canvass.
Ali, however, absorbed all the punches, while he continued to unleash telling blows on Booth's ribs and mid-section. At the end of round three, the British challenger was spotting a cut on his face and his nose was bloodied.
A few minutes into the fourth round, Booth's Manager, Mr. James Russel threw in the towel to save his ward from further punishment.
This victory improves Ali's record to 53 wins from 75 fights. His manager, Mr. Razaq Bello-Osagie, said Ali's next target is to seek a unification bout with the World Boxing Council (WBC) or the World Boxing Assocition (WBA) title holder, a fight that will fulfill his dream of becooming the oldest man in history to win a heavyweight title.
Former Information Minister, Chief Alex Akinyele and erstwhile Editor of the The Sunday Punch and now Chairman of Ejigbo local government area, Deacon Ayo Ositelu praised his for emerging victorious from the contest.
The first bout of the night, a National Cruiserweight title contest saw Mohammed Dauda retaining his title over Challenger King Eze via a fourth round knock out. This was the pattern that followed other contests of the night. The only fight that lasted the distance was the 12-rounder National Lightweight duel between Policeman Sunday and challenger, Sharafa King. The judges scored the fight a draw.
