Police Beef Up Security, As House Holds Retreat

Police beefed up security in Minna, Niger State capital at the weekend for the three-day retreat for members of the House of Representatives, which kicks-off today simultaneously in Bauchi, Osogbo and the town.
The three-day talkshop, which was to be declared open by President Olusegun Obasanjo, would now be flagged off by the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Audu Ogbeh, while the Senate Deputy President, Senator Ibrahim Mantu, would chair the occasion.
Venue of the retreat Abdusalami Abubakar Centre, hotels and major highways leading to the town and the intra-city were seen been manned by policeman, while police patrol on the notorious Minna-Suleja road as doubled since Friday.
Briefing the state Governor, Engineer Abdulkadir Kure, of the state of preparedness, the chairman, House Organising Committee for the Minna Centre, Hon. Osita Isunaso, said all was set for the brain stormy session.
According to him, the local organising committee set up by the state government did a perfect job for the retreat, adding that delegates would have swell time in Minna.
Isunaso told the governor that seasoned lawmakers from within and outside the country are expected as resources persons, citing the likes of Second Republic Senate President, Chief Joseph Wayas, immediate past Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives, Chief Chubudom Nwuche and others as guest speakers with 120 delegates each Minna centre, Isunaso said would be hosting 140 lawmakers, the highest of the three centres.
He attributed the large number of the centre to its proximity to the federal capital Territory (FCT) and its serenity and security,' saying many of our members wanted to come to Minna because the feel the town is safe and secure, while others wanted it because of its the closest to Abuja."
Isunaso, who led other members of his committee on a courtesy call on the governor Sunday, added that the Chief whip of the House, Honourable Bawa Bwari, would be the political head of the retreat, which has legislators in a multi party democracy" as its think.
