15 Naval Men Face Sack over Crude Oil Theft
From George Oji in Abuja

Fifteen naval personnel may have their appointments terminated over their alleged involvement in a shady crude oil deal.

The fifteen personnel, who included a Captain (Army colonel equivalent), three Lt. Commanders (Army major equivalent) and other ratings were deployed by the navy to guard "Africa Pride," a ship arrested sometime last year in Warri for carrying 11,300 tons of crude oil believed to have been stolen. The arrest and seizure of the vessel according to naval sources was duly authorised by the Nigeria National corporation (NNPC).

The four naval officers were alleged to have connived with the ratings to sell the oil without proper authorisation and made away with the proceeds.

In order to cover up their deal, the navy was alleged to have reported to NNPC that contrary to the initial report that the seized vessel had 100 per cent crude oil content, it had 98 per cent water and only two per cent crude.

This development made the NNPC to promptly lodge a formal complain to the Presidency, who accordingly directed the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Samuel Afolayan, to investigate the issue.

It was however not clear, whether or not it was this that prompted the then Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) the Western Naval Command, Real Admiral Anthony Bob-Manuel last December to court martial the affected men for trial.

Naval authorities revealed to THISDAY that the trial found the suspects guilty of the alleged fraud and that one of the Lt. Commanders with minor involvement was ordered to lose seniority for three months.

The remaining officers and ratings THISDAY gathered may be sent packing from the service and handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to face further trial and possible jail terms for economic crime.
