Cultists Kill 16 at Ataba From Donald Andoor in Port Harcourt No fewer tha n 16 persons were reportedly killed yesterday at Ataba community in Andoni Local Government of Rivers State, following violent clashes by two rival cult groups. Athough, the police could not be reached for confirmation of casualty figures, THISDAY gathered the clash was triggered off at about 2.00am (early sunday morning) when members of a cult group arrived the creek community and opened fire against its opponents who also responded with fire. It was gathered the exchange of gun fire continued till evening. At the end about 16 people were reportadly killed while many others sustained injuries in the confusion that ensued as people tried to flee for safety. The clash, coming on the heels of an intensive campaign by the Rivers state government to recover illegally acquired firearms showed the government would have to evolve more strategies of recovering illegal arms in the hands of people of questionable characters. Ataba community had witnessed series of bloody clashes that left in their trail a number of casualties, one of which was in April when the campaign team of the gubernatorial candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Chief Sergeant Awuse was attacked and about five people killed.
