2007: Presidency Denies Sponsoring Marwa From Chuks Okocha in Abuja Presidency has denied supporting or sponsoring the presidential aspiration of former military administrator of Lagos State, Brigadier General Buba Marwa (rtd). Also, President Olusegun Obasanjo has barred his aides from making any comments on the 2007 elections or the perceived aspirants of that election. Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, Special Assistant Public Affairs to the President in a statement in Abuja yesterday said: "My attention has being drawn to a statement in THISDAY (Saturday) edition to the extent that Marwa is the anointed presidential candidate by 2007. "For the avoidance of doubt and sake of clarity, I did not say and neither did I mean to suggest that Buba Marwa will succeed President Olusegun Obasanjo by 2007." Fani-Kayode explained that what he said was that "Marwa as a Nigerian and indeed like all Nigerians has the potential which could be achieved in the fullness of time and these potentials could be achieved in many ways and not necessarily in politics or by being the President." He disclosed that the President has barred all his aides from comments on issues and personalities involved in the 2007 Presidential polls. "Currently," Fani-Kayode said, "there is an instruction, that those of us in government should not make any such comments for now and neither have I done so." He added that the presidential gag became imperative because if "those of us in government should make any such comments ...it would be regarded as a distraction to government and the president."
