FCT Police Boss Queried on Rising Crime
From George Oji in Abuja

Police headquarters in Abuja has summoned the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Commissioner, Mr. Emmanuel Adebayo, over the rising crime wave in the FCT, particularly armed robbery.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Mr. Sunday Ehindero, who disclosed this at a press conference at the weekend, in Abuja said the summons became necessary in view of public complaints about the embarrassing crime situation in the FCT.

The incidence of armed robbery has been very rampant in Abuja recently, particularly bank robbery. In the past few weeks for instance, robbers made very successful robbery operations at three banks right at the center of the city, fueling public apprehension over the capability of the police to ensure security within the city.

Public apprehension was fueled by the brazenness, frequency and impunity at which the bank robberies were carried out without adequate police response.

In each of the robberies, the robbers casually walked away with their loots, and in two of the cases left two police men dead. The bank robberies in particular have instilled psychological fears and insecurity among residents of Abuja.

Ehindero added that the force headquarters' intervention was meant to seek ways of assisting the FCT command contain the situation before it got out of hand.

He noted that as part of assistance to the command, 50 walkie talkies have been made available to the command so as to ensure quicker communication among police men.

THISDAY gathered that the decision to summon Adebayo by the police high command arose from queries raised by the presidency over the growing insecurity within the FCT.
