PPPRA to Deploy Staff to Fuel Depots From Onyebuchi Ezigbo in Abuja Management of the Petroleum Product Pricing Regulatory Agen-cy (PPPRA), is considering deploying its staff to the country's fuel depot, to operate side by side those of the Pipeline Products Marketing Company (PPMC). The plan, according to sources close to the agency, was to ensure proper monitoring and feedback on the state of supply and distribution of petroleum products across the country. But THISDAY reliably gathered that the agency's proposal may have met brick wall, as top PPMC officials are opposed to the presence of the PPPRA staff, who they say would amount to duplication of roles and attempt to usurp the duties of the company. PPMC is a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), whose business is to oversee import of petroleum products into the country, manage reception and depot facilities on behalf of the corporation. While the law setting up PPPRA mandates it to manage petroleum product prices and in doing so, undertake a regular assessment of the supply and demand situation locally and internationally, sources within the agency also revealed a subtle but determined campaign by the price regulatory body to get other parastatals under the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to support it financially, in funding its activities. It said that the plan to send staff to the depots, apart from making PPPRA exert more influence in the operations of the downstream sector, will serve as means of getting the needed funding support.
