Okija: Group Decries Call for Police Quiz From Okon Bassey in Port Harcourt Functional Democratic Initiative (FDI), has kicked against the call by the House of Representatives on the Inspector General of Police, Tafa Balogun, to interrogate Governor Chris Ngige, in the on going investigation of allegations of ritual killings in Okija. In a statement made available to THISDAY yesterday, the group said the move to quiz Ngige was presumptious, lacks precedence in Nigerian history and follows the same procedure that led to the withdrawal of the governor's security by the IGP. The group challenged the House to insist on the publication of all the names in the registers of the priests already in Police possession. "The House should face squarely its primary constitutional business and press for the police to eradicate cultism from our campuses," the statement said. "We are not holding brief for the criminals including the suspects in the Okija episode, we are concerned that the critical segments of the society, including the legislature and the media, appear to have presumed the suspects guilty even before trial and contrary to available facts," the statement added. They explained that the action of the House appears to be more suspicious, considering that the House was silent on Chief Chris Uba, who was linked with forcefully taking Ngige to a shrine as a gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
