June 12: Group Demands Apology from Obasanjo, Anenih,Ooni, Others
From Ademola Adeyemo in Ibadan
A pro-Babaginda group has demanded a public apology from some Nigerian leaders believed to have aided the military to annul the 1993 June 12 presidential election believed to have been won by the late M.K.O. Abiola.
The group, Nigerian Youths for IBB, in a release faulted the call by Professor Wole Soyinka that former President Ibrahim Babangida should apologise to Nigerians over the annulment of the 1993 presidential election before he can contest the 2007 presidential election.
However the group in the release said if Babangida should apologise, other civilian collaborators who aided the annulment or helped to stabilise post annulment military goverment of Sani Abacha, should also apologise to the nation.
The Youths argued that it was unfair to single out Babangida for public apology if IBB should apologise what of the civilian collaborators suich as Olusegun Obasanjo who said Abiola was not the messiah Nigeria`needs."
"What of Chief Ernest Shonekanwho was a beneficiary? What of Ooni of Ife who said IBB was making sense? What of Chief Anthony Anenih, Abiola's party chairman who played a collaborative role?
In the release, signed by the groups South-west coordinator,Adeniyi Adewale and Oyo State coordinator Mr Kareem Badamosi, the youth said 'Babangida's acceptance of all responsibilities for the annulment is not enough to make only him apologise. We think other civilian collaborators especially those from South-west should also apologise."'We also appeal to Nigerians to forget and forgive the past and let us move forward. We should only emphasise what can unite us and not what can divide us," the group said.
They also advised Nigerians especially the Yoruba's not to oppose Babangida's ambition, "as he is the only competent person who can succeed Obasanjo."
