Deputy Gov Decries Fake Drugs Proliferation From Efem Nkanga in Uyo Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State Dr. Chris Ekpenyong has decried the proliferation of fake drugs and reiterated government's determination in ridding the state of fake drugs and unwholesome processed foods through the setting up of a laboratory to analyse suspected fake drugs, unwholesome foods and water. Ekpenyong disclosed this when members of the state task force on counterfeit and unwholesome drugs and processed foods paid him a courtesy visit. He however warned the peddlers of fake drugs against feeling that they can lobby government to cover them. He urged them. He urged them to desist from their evil practices, stressing that government will not hesitate to prosecute them, if caught. He commended the task force for its diligence and transparency, promising them the full backing of the state government in the prosecution of fake drug peddlers. He warned that fake and substandard unwholesome drugs and foods seized by the task force should not be returned to their owners, rather such profiteers should be made to face the wrath of the law. Earlier, the chairman of the 10-man task force, Mr. Sebastian Bassey, informed the deputy governor that the task force has so far sealed up, 8 pharmacy shops and over 50 patent medicine shops in the state. He also disclosed that the task force is prosecuting a pharmacist in Ikot Ekpene for selling fake and substandard drugs. He said the pharmacy shop has also been sealed up, while cartoons of fake drugs were seized.
