Nasarawa Provides Security, Transport for Refugees From Amby Uneze in Calabar Some of the displaced persons, who took refuge in Nasarawa State following the sectarian crises in Plateau State, have started returning home with the Nasarawa State Government providing transport and security. A press statement by Governor Abdullahi Adamu's Senior Special Assistant (Media), Victoria N. Ikeano, quotes the governor as directing local government authorities to provide land for farming or building houses, for those who choose to remain in the state. According to the statement, Adamu, while noting that the constitution guarantees every Nigerian the right and freedom to live in any part of the country, said assistance given the refugees was in line with divine injunctions: "The Koran and the Bible enjoin us to be our brothers' keepers", he said. At the height of the crises, Nasarawa State harboured 25,000 refugees scattered in various local government areas. in Azara, Wamba, Farin Ruwa and Lafia council areas. The governments of Kebbi, Zamfara, Kano, Sokoto, and Kano, donated both in cash and kind for the refugees up-keep. Adamu was also praised by religious and secular groups for his humanitarian gestures to the displaced persons. The National Women's Group of Jama'atu Nasirl Islam (JNI) Aid Group, made him the "Grand Patron" of the Group during a courtesy call at Government House in appreciation of his humane gestures. Leader of the delegation, Hajia Aliko Mohammed said it was in appreciation of the fact that Adamu was the only governor who accommodated 25,000 refugees. The Plateau crises which started some years ago, climaxed in April, leading to President Olusegun Obasanjo declaring a State of Emergency and appointed General Chris Alli (rtd) its Sole Administrator.
