S/Africa Win Relay Gold Dash Phelps's eight gold record dream South Africa ruined American Michael Phelps's dream of winning a record eight gold medals with a stunning victory in the men's 4x100 metres freestyle final at the Athens Olympics yesterday. The South African quartet of Roland Schoeman, Lyndon Ferns, Darian Townsend and Ryk Neethling stopped the clock at three minutes 13.17 seconds to wipe half a second off the old world record set by Australia at the last Olympics. The Netherlands took the silver in 3:14.36, while the United States collected bronze in 3:14.62. The U.S. had won the men's relay at every Olympics before losing to the Aussies at Sydney but were expected to make amends in Athens. However, the South Africans firmed as favourites after just missing the world record in the morning heats and the result was as good as over once Schoeman ploughed through the opening leg in 48.17 seconds. They were well clear heading into the final changeover when Neethling reeled off a final leg of 47.91 to clinch the world record.
