London Takes Pool to Kano
After successfully hosting the Lagos Regional final at Ikorodu Town Hall, on July 31, 2004, the London brand of cigarettes from the stable of the British American Tobacco (BAT) took the Pool Challenge to Kano last weekend. The "8" ball pool game, which has become a past time in neighbourhood bars, cafes and restaurants, is the platform on which London brand, a brand of British American Tobacco, is using to promote entertainment.
The Kano regional holds at the Kano Central Hotel, Sabongari as an event which is exclusive to adults 18 years and above
The total fun and entertainment package was berth at the commercial city, where finalists who had qualified from the region will slugged it out.
London challenge which was launched in 2001 has an improved total entertainment package for those skillful players who can make a difference in the game.
Other regional finals are slated for Kaduna, Akure and Owerri.
The Lagos event in the early hours of Sunday August 1, 2004, was jubilation galore when Saibu Omotoyinbo won himself the grand prize of N100,000 emerging the Lagos regional final of the London Pool Challenge.
The pool challenge final which was held inside the spacious Ikorodu Town Hall, in the outskirts of Lagos drew thousands of youths who are followers of the game of pool and quality entertainment.
In the keenly contested game, Omotoyinbo thrashed Niyi Bamboo 21, before he was declared winner amidst celebrations. Automatically, Niyi Bamboo became the first runnerup. He went home with a prize of N20,000.
The third place honour went to Chokwu Chidiebere who qualified from Badagry area of Lagos. He equally smiled home with N10,000 cash prize.
It was not all about pool. The night was filled with fun, music, and dance. Pool enthusiasts danced excitedly to current hip hop, juju, high-life and fuji music from the juke box of D] Ozone, who kept them on their feet till day break.
London Challenge tournament which took off some weeks back in Lagos in some designated bars and restaurants across the city, saw 320 participants vying for honours. But at the end of the day, only 16 made it to the regional final.
They were Ibrahim Osho, Temitayo Ojo, Adisa Kehinde, Bolaji Akanni, Salbu Omotoyinbo, Falola Oyebode, Seyi Fadairo and Akinbunmi Morakinyo. Others were Yemi Saliu, Chukwu Chidiebere, Musa Lawal, Nicholas Gbenga, Atunrase Idris, Niyi Bamboo, Idahie Ajade and Samuel Osuntope.
Excited Jane Ohadike, Brand manager, London declared at the end of the successful tournament: "I am impressed, and happy that we are able to provide top quality entertainment".
