18 students killed in cult war
NANS blames govt top shots
NKIRU OKEKE,
Enugu
NATIONAL
Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) alleged yesterday that about 18 students
of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and Enugu State University of Science
and Technology (ESUT) have been killed in cult wars in the last two weeks.
NANS also said some unnamed Enugu state
government officials were behind the campus cultists and often came to their
rescue whenever they are arrested by the police.
Daily Champion
learnt that piqued by the constant killings, the NANS Committee on Violent
Crimes, Crises and Cultism Eradication and Management was mandated to visit
Enugu State and ascertain the cause of the lingering issue and also proffer
solution.
Speaking on the findings of the committee,
at a press conference, the committee chairman, Mr. Ekwuonye Kingsley Chibuzor,
alleged that the government officials fanned the embers of cultism in the state,
adding that most of them were members of various secret cults.
The committee claimed that most of the
arms used by the cultists were procured by some politicians during the last
elections in the state.
According to the committee, "cult
activities have extended to many secondary schools. Their counterparts in the
tertiary institutions monitor the activities of such young cultists. These cult
groups mainly use the young cultists as intelligence and errand boys."
The committee said there was scanty
recreational activities for youths and students in the state, adding that most
students spend their time idle.
The committee therefore urged the state
government, to, urgently, fish out those government officials who encourage
cultism.
"The state governor should not allow such
people to mollify his various good works in the state. We recommend that those
involved should be disengaged and prosecuted so as to instill fear in their cult
members, discourage intending members and also serve as a deterrent to future
cult financiers," NANS said.
