Senate is disciplined Makama
NDIDI OKAFOR, Abuja
CHAIRMAN,
National Population Commission (NPC), Alhajji S.B. Makama, on Tuesday evening
gave the Senate a pass mark and described its members as disciplined people.
He, however, carpeted the critics of
President Olusegun Obasanjo describing them as "indisciplined people".
Alhaji Makama stated these at the Senate
during public hearing on the Amendment of the National Population Commission Act
270 of 1988.
The NPC boss commended the Senate even as
the Upper Legislative chamber is said to have discarded the report of its
committee on States and Local Government Administration led by Senator Iyabode
Anisulowo.
A source close to the Upper House said the
Senate caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), met last week and resolved
to "kill the report so as not to heat up the polity". "It should be treated as a
family matter", the source added.
The report which was submitted by
Anisulowo indicated some prominent politicians in Benue State regarding the
crisis in Kwande local government area.
The report which had already been put on
notice for debate, it was learnt, has been "killed at the PDP Senate caucus".
When asked to comment, Anisulowo said she
was not aware, but added that the Senate had the right to make the final
decision on the report.
The NPC chairman described as "indisciplined
those criticising President Obasanjo and his policies saying that "it is only in
Nigeria that people criticize and abuse the president and go free".
He commended the Senate and described the
proposed amendments as very "timely and aimed at strenghtening the commission".
Earlier, the Senate leader, Dalhatu Tafida
and Senator Ehinlenwo chairman of the Committee on Population, had said the
amendment bill proposed by Senator Martin Yelewe was very desirable.
At the plenary session, the Senate also
considered a motion on "flood disaster in Dirma, Dumme and Loko towns in Song
local government area of Adamawa State" brought before it by Senator Jubril
Aminu.
The Senate granted his prayer of asking the National
Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to said relief materials to the displaced
people in Song Local government.
