The chairman, House of
Representatives committee on finance, Hon. Farouk Lawan, has described the Vision 2010 by late General Sani Abacha, as an important document that deserves government’s attention.
Speaking on the reforms embarked upon by the present administration, the lawmaker posited that the document contained the palliatives that were needed by the country to heal its present ailments.
According to him, contributors to the document were experts drawn from various backgrounds who gave their best in the interest of national development.
In his words: “We had Vision 2010 developed by Abacha. All experts in vari-ous areas of specialisation were assembled and they came up with that, but bec-ause of instability in the country, somebody else came and abandoned the whole thing,” he said.
The lawmaker lamented that in the past one year, there has not been any seri-ous contributions from the public on the reforms being undertaken by government.
He however offered that legislators were now making moves to institute reforms beginning with the 2005 budget presentation.
Farouk Lawan further disclosed that when the reforms were put in place, it will be impossible for some-body in the presidency to forward questionable propo-sals, to the National Asse-mbly seeking for matching funds which eventually ends up in pockets.
He said the National Assembly members are now ready to monitor the implem-entation of programmes.
According to him, Nigerians know that they were being short changed by con-tractors and civil servants while politicians collude with them.
He said the collusion will soon stop as a Bill on public procurement will soon by brought to the House as one of the mechanisms to curtail fraud in the civil service.
“You have a situation where somebody would sit down and connive to issue contracts.” |
