YOUR LETTERS Re: NNPC spends N40m to renovate spokesman’s residence For the past two days, your reporter, Mallam Ahmed 1. Shekarau has indulged in sustained false reports about my person and caused these to be published in your newspaper. The kernel of his reports is that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, (NNPC), of which I am proud to be General Manager, Group Public Affairs, spent N40 million to renovate my residence. As I said during my interaction with him, I reiterated that this report is absolutely false. By NNPC policy, the benefits of all cadres of staff, including myself, are monetised. These benefits include accommodation, furnishings and lunch, amongst others. This policy is consistent with government’s policy of reducing cost and only the Group Managing Director is exempted from this policy because of the exigencies of his office. A little bit of investigative journalism would have confirmed this. It is impossible that after the NNPC has paid me my monetisation, the same Corporation will renovate my residence at N40 million. NNPC does not and will not double deal. I said these as much to Mr. Shekarau. I find it incomprehensible, therefore, that he will still proceed to state the opposite while trusting that you will publish this for the sake of balance and fairness, which are cardinal principles of our profession.
