Media Bill Not to Gag Press, Says Dabiri By Tokunbo Adedoja Chairman, House of Repre-sentatives Committee on Media and Publicity, Hon. Abike Dabiri has said Journalism Practice Welfare Enhancement Bill before the Lower Chamber was not aimed at gagging the press, but to enhance the practice of the noble profession. In a swift reaction to reports published in two national newspapers(not THISDAY) alleging that the bill was similar to the obnoxious Decree 4 of 1984, Dabiri, who is also one of the sponsors of the bill, said contrary to the report Section 27 quoted had been expunged from the bill. The lawmaker maintained that she will never be part of any attempt to gag the press as she is also a product of the journalism profession. " May I clarify that Section 27 being quoted has been expunged from the bill. I will in no way be part of any attempt to gag the media", she stated. She further maintained that she will continue to do all she could to protect the interests and welfare of journalists and also work towards strengthening the profession. She further said the bill, which actually originated from the Nigerian Union of Journalists(NUJ), "seeks only to improve the welfare of journalists and enhance our noble profession". Dabiri added that in order to ensure its smooth passage, NUJ has constituted a committee to liaise with members of the House.
