Why Owu Kingmakers Were Arrested - Regent
From Toba Suleiman in Abeokuta

Three Owu kingmakers who were released from detention yesterday morning have been accused of instigating some of the Owu Youths to embark on a protest leading to the destruction of property worth millions of Naira, belonging to one of the Owu High Chiefs last Sunday morning.

The Otun and the Owu Regent who is also one of the kingmakers, chief Ola Yusuf, who addressed a press conference in Abeokuta disclosed that the Monday arrest has nothing to do with the selection of the new Olowu.

"The arrest was in connection with the disturbance of public peace, destruction of property, and assault on people following the successful celebration of Owu Festival last Saturday in Abeokuta."

He recalled that the five kingmakers called a press conference last week Monday to cancel Owu Day celebration.

"But following a peace meeting held last Wednesday at the Ota farm of President Olusegun Obasanjo, it was resolved by all parties that the Owu Day Celebration should hold." According to him, the meeting was facilitated by the Governor Gbenga Daniel.

While acknowledging that the five kingmakers stayed away from the celebration, Yusuf accused them of mobilising hoodlums to disrupt the celebration.

"These sponsored hoodlums instigated by the arrested warrant chiefs came to Oke Ago - Owu, Abeokuta, at 2.00am on Sunday August 15, and attacked the joyful celebrants", he said.

According to him, "more than 25 vehicles were damaged and badly destroyed, while many people were assaulted and injured with broken bottles and other dangerous weapons."

"According to eye witness account, about 30 of the hoodlums swapped on the house of the Otun of Owu, Chief M. Ola Yusuf at Oke Ago - Owu and smashed the windows, doors and shot at the house."

"Many of the occupants in the house were assaulted and wounded. Some of them entered the house and destroyed the roofing sheets and the ceiling".

"The hoodlums also threatened to go and destroy the houses of prince Bola Ajibola and other prominent citizens of Owu who were perceived to be supporters of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo."

While appealing that police should be allowed to carry out their full investigations over the matter, Yusuf equally assured Owu indigenes that peace would fully restore to the land.
