Na' Abba Wants Proper Funding for Legislature From Segun Awofadeji in Bauchi Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Ghali Umar Na'Abba, has said the Legislature is the most important arm of government but it's being underfunded which makes it difficult to operate. Na'Abba who spoke at the on-going House of Represen-tatives Retreat holding at the Awalah Hotel, Bauchi described the Legislature as the engine room of democracy, and called for the proper funding of the Legislature to enable it carryout its statutory functions more efficiently and effectively so as to ensure good governance and sustainable democracy in the country. The former speaker noted that the "worst democracy is far better than the best military rule", and therefore enjoined the nation's Lawmakers in particular, and the Nigerian Politicians in general to jealously guard the nation's fragile democracy. He however stressed the importance of the independence of the Legislature in ensuring lasting democracy, saying that it should continue to act as checks and balances in the current democratic dispensation. While emphasising the need to improve the welfare of legislators, Na' Abba described the Legislature as a critical tool in the art and science of Lawmaking.
