Delta Assembly, Agip Oil on Collision Course
From Jaiyeola Andrews in Asaba
Management of Agip Oil company may soon be on a collision course with Delta State House of Assembly, as the house yesterday threatened to issue a warrant of arrest on top mangement members of the oil company within the next one week.
The house was miffed by failure of Agip to appear before it to explain the fire that followed the oil spill in Abalagada, Aboh and Okpai all in Ndokwa East Council area.
It also frowned at the levity with which the managing director, General Manager, Public Affairs of Agip in Port Harcourt treated the summon on them to appear before it.
Minority leader of the house, Hon. Funkekenie Solomon while arguing on the floor of the house, said "Agip should be summoned, if it refuse, its alter ego should be issued a warrant of arrest".
According to him, he wondered why Agip did not appear before the house, when other oil companies who where summoned in the past honoured it.
However, the report on the oil spills in Abalagada by the house committee on oil and gas was declared inconclusive, because Agip oil company refused to appear before the house.
Also on the floor of the house yesterday, the legislators called on the state emergency relief agency to send relief materials to Ogoibiri community in Bomadi council area of the state which was invaded by the army code-named "Operation restore hope".
Member representing Bomadi constituency at the house, Hon. Reginald Dombraye averred that Ogoibiri community suffered wanton destruction of lives and property in the hands of the invading army.
The house in an unianimous decission supported the calls on the agency, just as it directed the commissioner, Bureau for special duties, Mr. Austin Ayemidejor to take proper inventory of the property destroyed with a view to paying adequate compensation to the affected victims.
