2007 Campaigns: PDP Unfair to Members - Yakassai
From Chuks Okocha in Abuja
The directive to members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to stop campaigning for the 2007 polls is unfair, a chieftain of the ruling party, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, has said.
The PDP Tuesday expressed worries over the unrestrained campaigns ahead 2007 elections. It said it would soon release guidelines for all categories of elections.
But at a session with newsmen in Abuja yesterday, Yakassai said, "this directive of 'no campaigns' on members of the party is not fair, because other political parties are busy campaigning and the PDP is telling its members that it is an offence to commence campaigns."
He observed, "As far as we politicians are concerned, no campaign is too early" adding, "the earlier the campaigns, the better for Nigerians to know and access the aspirants."
"If the recent updating of this directive in Lafia by the PDP leadership that its members should not embark on campaigns yet, is anything to go by, then, it is that either the PDP does not understand the full meaning and implication of their decision or that the party is busy working against the interest of its members who have interest in various elective positions," Yakassai said.
He called on members of the party to disregard the directive, describing it as a violation of their fundamental human rights.
He said by its action, "the party seems to be sacrificing the interest of the majority of its members in order to pave way for people who are not members of the party, so as to give such people advantage over others."
He alleged that the directive is a plot by the leadership of PDP to sabotage the political ambition of some of its members who have eyes on 2007.
He decried the action of the party warning "this directive is not promoting the spirit of democracy and fair competition which democracy represents."
