Ajaokuta: 'Indian Firm Lacks Technical Expertise' From Onyebuchi Ezigbo in Abuja African Steel Association, a continental body of professionals in the steel sector, yesterday cautioned the Federal Government over the danger in entering into a fresh technical and financial agreement with an Indian firm - Global Infrastructure, which it said lacks the needed technical depth and background knowledge of the Ajaokuta Steel Company. Secretary General of the Association, Dr. Sanusi Moha-mmed told THISDAY that he is compelled to raise the alarm even at the risk of being accused of undue haste, to draw government's attention to some bobby-traps that lay ahead to avoid a repeat of the Solgas episode. Mohammed said due to the complex history of the Ajaokuta steel company and coupled with the peculiar nature of the Blast Furnace technology adopted at the time of initial construction, which not many countries are very conversant with, the Indians will find it extremely difficult to make any headway without the involvement of the Russians. "From what we have found out, though Global Infrastru-cture, a subsidiary of ISPAT International Management of India may have the needed financial muscle, it is certainly ill-prepared to handle the rehabilitation and operation of the long abandoned complex," he said. He noted that no company or organization could completely accomplish the reconstruction of the steel complex without the Russian company, which began the building of the whole project at its infant stage and is an acclaimed specialist in Blast Furnace.
