House Denies Abandoning Retreat for IBB's Birthday By Olawale Olaleye House Committee Chairman on Media and Publicity, Hon. Abike Dabiri, has clarified media reports that members of the lower chamber of the National Assembly who were on a three-day retreat in Minna, Niger State, Tuesday, abandoned the afternoon plenary session for the 63rd birthday of former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Baban-gida. Dabiri spoke with THISDAY yesterday and faulted the report, clarifying issues that members of the legislature did not abandon their retreat but found time in between the afternoon and morning session to have lunch at the instance of the state governor, Abdulkadir Kure at Babangida's Hilltop mansion. A report yesterday alleged that members of the House who had their retreat in Minna abandoned their afternoon plenary session for Babangida birthday party. The report had it that the lawmakers who were led by Chief Whip of the House, Hon. Abu Bawa Buwari arrived venue of the party when the ceremony was almost over. The report also mentioned that Dabiri requested for seats for the lawmakers because the seats earlier reserved for them had been taken over by other guests. It was equally in the report that the lawmakers took turns shaking hands with the former ruler. But Dabiri, while dismissing the report, explained the lawmakers did not abandon the retreat, but were invited by Kure for lunch at Babangida's home. Besides, she noted that they had lunch between the morning and afternoon sessions of the retreat. Dabiri explained that what was published was made to seem as if the lawmakers abandoned the retreat Babangida adding that the period spent with the former ruler was just an hour which was still within the period of break.
