Lagos Suspends Metroline for Bus Transit By Oghenekevwe Laba Managing Director of Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) Dr. Dayo Moberuola has affirmed that the state is not financially capable to introduce the metroline transport service as a means of mass transportation because the project is very expensive. Moberuola made this confirmation in Lagos during LAMATA Board of Directors tour of various sites in which the organisation is currently executing maintenance and rehabilitation works, explaining that in place of the metroline project, they have decided to introduce a bus transit system which he described as an alternative means of transport which is cheaper and affordable. He however said it is not that they have finally given up about the introduction of metroline but they want to take the development of mass transit system in the state in stages because of the complexity and the cost involved. " To construct a metroline will cost between 80 million to 85 million dollars. You will see that it is on a higher side financially to construct a metroline. Another alternative is the bus transit system which is affordable and cheaper", Moberuola said. On solving the problems of heavy traffic congestions in Lagos, Moberuola pointed out that the introduction of the bus transit system will solve the problem because a single bus with about 250 passengers will displace no fewer than 20 vehicles on the street adding that when finally introduced, an average of 100 vehicles will be replaced by one bus and this will reduce traffic in Lagos.
