Group Condemns Priests, Patrons of Okija Shrine By Sheriff Balogun A group, known as Congress for Igbo Agenda (CIA), has condemned activities of priests and patrons of the Okija Shrines, saying, "we must make it clear that such practice is not, can not and will never be Igbo culture and tradition." Addressing newsmen yesterday, President of the group, Reverend Chukwudi Peace, said "It is a well known fact that in Igbo land, monotheism is supreme, the religion, culture and tradition of Ndigbo is nothing but monotheism (worship of the One True and Almighty God) and activities of a few misguided individuals cannot change that." Peace said the group view recent statements credited to some of the shrine's patrons as uncalled for, adding that "the entire members of the congress and every well meaning Igbo hereby dissociate themselves from statements credited to some of those few misguided individuals who want the world to believe that what they are doing at Ogwugwu shrines are part of our culture and tradition, thereby giving the enemies of this great race opportunity to attempt to tear into shreds the goodwill we have been able to build among well meaning Nigerians, especially as the call for Igbo presidency is gathering momentum." The group said "if the publicity that Okija shrines is receiving is given to the annual rituals of the massacres of non indigenes in the Northern part of this country and the discovery of the same shrines in Edo, Kogi, Ondo State and other parts of the country, Nigeria would have been one of the safest places to live in."
