ABSIEC Promises Aggrieved Justice Abia From Emeka Osondu in Umuahia Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) has assured that it would conduct bye elections in any area of the state where genuine claims of electoral malpractices and rigging are proved. In a post-election media briefing, its Chairman, Professor Stephen Emejuaiwe, also said the commission would soon conduct bye elections in wards where election results have not been declared, to enable it fill vacant posts created as a result of cancellation. Emejuaiwe listed the affected places as Osisioma, Isiala Ngwa South and Arochukwu, adding that the commission had to cancel the results to avoid manipulation, because they were brought to its office days after elections were held. He said so far, over 70 petitions have been filed before the two local government election tribunals for the purpose of determining claims of electoral malpractices. Emejuaiwe noted that the problem with the electoral system is the attempts by politicians to bend the law in their favour, pointing out that any dent in the electoral process could not be traced to the electoral bodies, as they had always strived to uphold the rule of law.
