Alamieyeseigha Approves N1.5m for Ijaw Project

Not less than N1.5 million has been approved by Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha for the Ijaw history project.
The money is expected to ease the work of the Ijaw history project committee made up of eminent scholars Renowned historian, Professor Ebiegberi Alagoa, chairs the committee.
This was disclosed by the National President of Ijaw National Congress (INC), Professor Kimse Okoko, in a statement issued in Yenagoa.
According to the statement the national executive committee of the INC decided to request Governor Alamieyeseigha to personally inaugurate the Ijaw history project committee because of what it called "his commitment to INC activities and his demonstrated patriotism to the Ijaw cause".
"I know that we have a rich history and a proud cultural project which has not been sufficiently documented," he added.
He expressed confidence that the project will be a huge success and praised the governor for the N1.5 million take off grant for the project.
Alamieyeseigha urged members of the committee to produce a document that would not only be comprehensive and holistic but also verifiable.
According to him, members of the committee have the unique privilege to unravel the mystery surrounding the origin of the Ijaw race.
He noted that in addition to being a serious reference material, the facts in the final document must be verifiable for it to stand the test of time.
The governor said it was imperative to include the language and culture of the people in the project, adding that the Ijaw nation has highly competent historians and would not need to hire outsiders to execute the project.
He urged members of the committee, including Professor Tekena Tamuno, Chief Frank Opigo, Dr. Egbede, Professor C. A. Dime, Chief Nduku, Reverend B. A. Obuoforibo and Professor N. C. Ejituwu to consult widely in the course of the project.
Alamieyeseigha said the government was ready and committed to provide adequate logistic support for the success of the project.
