UNICEF/FIFA Female Tourney Begins From Iyefu Adoba in Abuja Female pupils from 70 primary schools drawn from 10 states in the country will from this weekend begin a football competition organised as a promotion in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The second zonal UNICEF/FIFA female football competition will also promote girls' education and protect children from sexual abuse and child labour. The competition organised by the United Nations Children Fund, (UNICEF), FIFA and the State Primary Education Boards, (SPEB), of the 10 states will take off in Enugu, and is scheduled to last a week. The 10 states featuring in the competition include Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Benue, Cross Rivers, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, and Rivers representing the 10 states that make up UNICEF Nigeria's A-field office. The alliance between UNICEF and FIFA gives girls the opportunity to play and learn and in 2003, FIFA donated sports-in-a-box-kits containing balls, pumps, training bibs, FIFA books and videos on football skills/rules of the game to UNICEF to support Nigeria and 11 other countries with low female enrolment in primary school. The first zonal competition, won by Oyo State, took place in June and was attended by schools from Ogun, Lagos, Delta, Oyo, Ekiti, Osun, Ondo, and Edo States. The winners of the four zonal competitions will eventually play each other to decide the national champion of the UNICEF/FIFA Female Football competition for primary Schools in Nigeria.
