'I Can't Save Bolton Alone'
  • Okocha pleads for more players
    By Tunde Sulaiman

Bolton Wanderers skipper Jay Jay Okocha has warned Reebok bosses that they need to open their purse strings and bring new faces to the club because the burden of keeping the club in the Premiership may be too much for even his broad shoulders.

The Super Eagles skipper who spoke moments after his man-of-the-match award last weekend in the 4-1 demolition of Charlton, warned that keeping the team in the top flight will be more difficult this season because of the spending power of other clubs.

He also pointed out that perhaps the reputation of his manager (Sam Allardyce) in working miracles with bargain buys should not be taken for granted by the Bolton management not to release funds to dabble in the transfer market in order to effectively compete.

"To keep up there with the other teams we've got to spend. It's unfortunate the manager has a reputation for achieving success with nothing. It might work for a while but we need to change that and invest. We can't keep expecting miracles. I wish we could bring in more players and we still have two weeks to do that. It would certainly ease my job a bit!"

Allardyce was spot on in luring the Nigerian skipper to the Reebok Stadium two years ago after he captained the Super Eagles at the World Cup in Korea and Japan, and has become one of his best purchases ever.

After spending the first season finding his feet he exploded last season when he replaced France World Cup winner Youri Djorkaeff as club captain on his 30th birthday and guided the club to the final of the Carling Cup with some stunning goals and an eighth placed finish - the highest in the club's history.

Last week he ended his Premiership goals drought with two strikes against Charlton and an impressive all round display, which fetched him the 'Man-of-the-Match' accolade.

Other names attracted to the Reebok by 'Big Sam' have been former Spanish international Jorge Campos and ex-French international defender Bruno Ngotty. This season he has also landed the services of former Spanish skipper Fernado Hierro. And moves are on to secure the services of Liverpool's Senegalese striker El-Hadji Diouf.
